Overview

Skeleton Coast National Park is 40 km wide and extends from the Ugab River in the south 500 km to the Kunene River long coastal stretch in Namibia. It is a hostile but fascinating area. It was proclaimed in its present form in 1973.

  • Best time to visit

    Skeleton Coast can be visited throughout the year, but the ideal time is during the warmer months from October to March. These months see a little bit of rain, which keeps the skies clear. Mornings are less foggy and it’s warmer at night than in the winter months.

    The Park is a host to animals like the Giraffe, Hippo, Buffalo, Oryx, Springbok, Steenbok, Zebra, Wildebeest, White Rhino and Black Rhino, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, gemsbok, desert-adapted elephant, Cape fur seals, brown hyena, giraffe and cheetah are occasionally found.

  • Birding

    The ideal time is summer (November to April) for a visit to Skeleton Coast with birding in mind. This is when the migratory birds arrive from Europe and northern Africa; thus, many more species can be seen compared to the rest of the year.

  • Weather

    The Park’s weather would be described  as very warm with a gentle breeze. For comparison sake, the hottest month in the Skeleton Coast National Park, November, has days with highs of 91°F (33°C) and lows of 59°F (15°C). The coldest month, July has days with highs of 71°F (22°C) and lows of 40°F (4°C)
