One of the famous Safari destinations in East Africa, Samburu National Reserve is located in Northern Kenya and is a premier game reserve. The park is 165 km² in size and is situated 350 kilometers from Nairobi. It ranges in altitude from 800 to 1230 m above sea level. The reserve was named after the Samburu people who live here with their livestock.
Samburu National Reserve is situated at the southeastern corner of Samburu District in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya in the vicinity of Mombasa.
It is a safari destination all year-round, however, excellent wildlife viewing experience is usually best in the dry season in the months of June to October and December to March.
Some of the animals found here include the commons like the abundant Elephants, Giraffe, Hippo, Buffalo and the Zebra. On the hand the Wildebeest, White Rhino and Black Rhino are non- existence here.
Five rare and endemic animals to the Samburu ecosystem are found here like the Gerenuk, the Reticulated giraffe, the Somali ostrich, the Grevy’s zebra and the Beisa oryx.
Samburu National Reserve is one of the most impressive sites in Kenya to go birding, the reserve is home to over 450 species recorded including coveted endemic and arid specialists such as the Somali Ostrich, vulturine guineafowl, Hunter’s sunbird and William’s lark among others.
It offers excellent Kenya birding opportunities, and it is recognized as an Important Birding Area in Kenya, the reserve boosts over 680 with over 400 species of resident and migrant birds from the dry hills of Kalama to the Ewaso Nyiro river in the Samburu National Reserve.
Samburu National Park has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct rainy periods, Average temperatures range from 163°F (July) to 176°F (February). The rainiest months are October, November and April Summers are practically dry. Temperatures are around 30 degrees on average.
