Damaraland

Damaraland was a name given to the north-central part of South West Africa, which later became Namibia, inhabited by the Damaras. It was bordered roughly by Ovambo land in the north, the Namib Desert in the west, the Kalahari Desert in the east, and the Windhoek region in the south.

The best time to go on a Damaraland safari is generally considered to be during the long dry winter. Temperatures and rainfall are both low from May to September – average highs range between 19 and 22°C (68 to 72°F) with rain virtually absent.

Damaraland is not a classic wildlife destination, wildlife is sparse and the main attraction is the arid desert environment like the Desert elephant and black rhino.

It an ideal for viewing black rhino, desert elephant, springbok, white-tailed shrike, augur buzzard ·and Erongo Regio.

Birdlife is prolific with over 33 raptors recorded including cuckoo hawks, Egyptian vultures and peregrine falcons, the world’s fastest animal.

Notable Birds in Damaraland include Lappet-faced vulture, Common, Martial eagle, Common, Monteiro’s hornbill, Locally common & near-endemic and Pale chanting goshawk.

Damaraland has a typical semi-desert climate, with temperatures rising up to well above 38°C (100°F) during the summer (November to April), with winter nights falling below freezing (May to October). The wet season occurs during summer and may have sporadic rainfall, but is unlikely to disturb your trip.
