The city lies in the south-central part of Kenya, at an elevation of 1,795 metres (5,889 ft).

The best time to visit Nairobi is during January to February and between June to September. The remaining seasons of the year are regarded as the wet seasons. Travelling during this season is quite inconvenient.

Nairobi National Park can be visited year-round, but wildlife viewing is best during the Dry season (June to October). Wildlife watching is more difficult during the long rains (March to May) and the short rains (November to December), although the timing of these rains has become less predictable in recent years

Species found in the park include lion, leopard, African buffalo, black rhinoceros, giraffe, hippopotamus, spotted hyena, blue wildebeest, plains zebra, cheetah, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, common eland, impala, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, olive baboon, black-backed jackal, common ostrich, and Nile.

The park also features the highest density of black rhino in Kenya as it functions as a rhino sanctuary. In fact, the park has been nicknamed “Kifaru Ark” – kifaru is Kiswahili for rhinoceros.

Nairobi National Park offers good bird watching throughout the year, but the best time is November to April when the migrants from Europe and North Africa are present
