Overview

Lake Kariba is the world’s largest artificial lake and reservoir by volume. It lies 1,300 kilo metres (810 mi) upstream from the Indian Ocean and covers an area of almost 6,000 square kilo metres and is fed by the Zambezi River.

    The best time to visit Lake Kariba is in May through July, when the temperature is significantly cooler. Fishing is good throughout the entire year, but bird watching is most enjoyable during the rainy season in October.

    Animals inhabitants of Lake Kariba include Nile crocodiles and hippopotamuses. Its waters supports more than 40 different species of fish like Vundu (locally known as Mazunda),· Barbel, Bottlenose, Nkupe, Squeaker Fish, Cornish Jack Fish, Gamefish particularly tigerfish, elmeted Guineafowl, Numida meleagris, Crested Francolin, Ortygornis sephaena, Natal Spurfowl, Pternistis natalensis  and Swainson.

    Lake Kariba is also the habitat of several fish species including the famous Tiger fish, Tilapia Bream and Nkupe, and the Bottlenose.

    This most famous park in Zimbabwe provides a haven for 107 mammal species and more than 400 recorded types of birds including the saddle-billed stork and waterbuck.

     

  • Weather

    Kariba is generally hot throughout the year but has three distinct seasons. The hot dry season between August and October. The hot wet season between November and April. The cooler dry season between May and July.
