Matobo Hills National Park

The Matobo Hills are located to the south of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city. The area covers about 3,000km2 in total, of which about 400km2

The dry season from April to October is the best time to visit Matobo National Park. It is the best time to spot wildlife and also viewing the animals migrating to the waterholes. There is less vegetation and more greenery allowing the visitors to explore the place without any hassle.

The game park, also known as Whovi or Hove Wild Area was established with animals translocated from the border areas of Hwange National Park. It has been restocked with white and black rhinos. Other animals to be seen include sable antelope, giraffe, zebra, impala, wildebeest and ostrich.

From a birding perspective, the park boasts the world’s largest concentration of Verreaux’s Eagles, along with African Hawk-eagle, Wahlberg, Crowned, Martial and African Fish Eagle, Bateleur, Augur Buzzard, Lanner and Peregrine Falcon, Gabar Goshawk, Secretarybird, Cape Eagle-owl, Boulder Chat, Yellow-billed Oxpecker,

Matobo National Park’s weather is temperate and fair. The warmest period is from October to March. From April to September it’s cooler during the day and it can get very cold at night in the midwinter months of May to July. The Dry season (April to October) is made up of clear, sun-filled days
