The iconic Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest national park located in the northwestern part of Zimbabwe. It covers 14,650 square kilometers.
Best Time: July to October (dry season). High Season: June to October (Hwange’s main area can become crowded). Low Season: January to May (some lodges close during part of the wet season). Best Weather: April to September (it hardly ever rains).
Teeming with wildlife, Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest national park, home to elephant, buffalo, sable, roan, giraffe, wildebeest, impala and even gemsbok. Named after a local Nhanzwa chief, the area was inhabited by San bushmen before being designated a national park in 1929.
The Park host about 500 bird species, Hwange National Park is a genuine birding hot spot. Grassland heavy weights include ostrich, kori bustard, southern ground hornbill and secretary bird and many more.
Hwange National Park experiences a warm climate. The warmest months are October to March, while May to August are the coolest. The Dry season (April to October) brings fine weather. Afternoon showers are common in the Wet season (November to March).
⇒ Morning: Drive Livingstone → Victoria Falls border → Hwange Main Camp. ∼2.5hrs + border time. Or fly into Hwange National Park Airport (HNN)
⇒ 12:30: Check into lodge/camp + lunch. Good bases: The Hide, Somalisa, Verney’s Camp for luxury, or Main Camp chalets for budget
⇒ 15:30: First game drive. Dry season Aug-Oct is prime — animals crowd the waterholes. Look for elephants, sable, buffalo
♣ Sundown: Sundowners at a waterhole hide. Then night drive if your lodge offers it — chance for leopards, hyenas, porcupine
♣ Sleep: In the park
⇒ 6:00: Early morning game drive when predators are active. Coffee + rusks in the bush. Lions, cheetah, wild dogs hunt at dawn
⇒ 10:00: Back to camp for brunch + siesta. Hwange gets hot midday
⇒ 12:00: Optional walk with an armed guide — track elephants on foot, learn spoor and plants
⇒ 15:30: Afternoon drive to different waterholes. Nyamandlovu Pan and Ngweshla are famous for big elephant gatherings
⇒ Evening: Dinner under the stars. Hwange camps often have hides overlooking floodlit waterholes — you can watch animals all night
⇒ 6:00: Last game drive or sunrise at a hide with coffee. Often the best sightings happen on the final morning
⇒ 9:30: Brunch + pack up
⇒ 11:00: Drive back to Livingstone/Vic Falls, or connect to your Zanzibar flight via Victoria Falls Airport VFA
