Samburu Game Reserve

Overview

Samburu National Reserve is one of the famous Safari destinations in East Africa located in Northern Kenya and is a premier game reserve. The park is 165 km² in size and is situated 350 kilometers from Nairobi. It ranges in altitude from 800 to 1230 m above sea level. The reserve was named after the Samburu people who live here with their livestock.

It is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including the iconic Big Five: lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants, and buffalo. It's also home to the endangered Grevy's zebra, a species unique to this region.

The best time to visit Samburu National Reserve is during the dry season, between July 1 and October and December to February. This is when wildlife is more concentrated around water sources, making sightings easier.

    Samburu National Reserve is situated at the southeastern corner of Samburu District in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya in the vicinity of Mombasa.

     

  • Best time to visit

    It is a safari destination all year-round, however, excellent wildlife viewing experience is usually best in the dry season in the months of June to October and December to March.

    It offers excellent Kenya birding opportunities, and it is recognized as an Important Birding Area in Kenya, the reserve boosts over 680 with over 400 species of resident and migrant birds from the dry hills of Kalama to the Ewaso Nyiro river in the Samburu National Reserve.

  • Weather

    Samburu National Park has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct rainy periods, Average temperatures range from 163°F (July) to 176°F (February). The rainiest months are October, November and April Summers are practically dry. Temperatures are around 30 degrees on average.
