The park is located in south eastern Tanzania, roughly 230 kilometers by road from Dar es Salaam city to Mtemere Gate, and was carved out from the Selous Game reserve, a huge wilderness area and safari destination in Southern Tanzania.
Wildlife viewing in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is best from June to October, during the Dry season. Wildlife is easier to spot in the thinning vegetation and animals gather at the Rufiji River and its associated lakes and lagoons.
Good numbers of Big Cats such as Lion, Leopard, Cheetah are to be found here along with other large Game animals such as Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Eland, Zebra, Wildebeest and other wildlife.
Nyerere national is one of the best destinations for birding safaris in Tanzania, birds in Nyerere can be seen all throughout the year however the best time to for birding is during the rainy season which starts in November lasting till April.
