Whitewashed, three stories tall, set in terraced gardens and possessing along its balconies low fort-like walls, the Beach House design is both a nod to local Arabic influences, and to the imposing Mediterranean builds encountered in the likes of Monaco.
Inside, on the first floor, it manages to fuse an almost ancient Egyptian effect – clean lines, columns, a marble finish, borderless pool, giant-sized seating flanked by stone steps – with a chic take on traditional Swahili decor. Cool, spacious, unfussy, it is both opulent and modern.
The rest of the building consists of a kitchen, a bar, numerous private terraces and five en-suite bedrooms, one of which is a triple.
Located at one end of Shela village, Lamu, and part of a group of 4 beautiful coastal villas, Beach House has long been a luxury refuge for those in the know.
It overlooks the sea, has direct access to the water and is a stone’s throw from the old village of Shela.
The rooms themselves are tasteful, large and comfortable. Each possesses its own extraordinary view of the ocean. The house also boasts Safaricom WiMax internet access.
Shopping trips, excursions or picnics on nearby Shela beach can be arranged with the minimum of fuss.
Please note that Beach House is especially popular over the New Year, which is why this period requires a minimum booking of two weeks.
The villa comes with its own dedicated team. Unobtrusive and expert, each member knows exactly what is needed, and when to provide it. Guests of Beach House are invited to collaborate with the chef over the content and styles of their meals
April through mid-May is the best time to go. Winter can get a bit cool and windy, and the water is too cool for many people.
