Manda Bay is an award-winning private island retreat which combines bare foot luxury with warm Kenyan hospitality.
Located off the Kenya coast in the Lamu Archipelago, Manda is only 20 mins by boat from neighbouring Lamu Island, a UNESCO world heritage site, which is steeped in Swahili culture and famed for its arts and crafts. Yet Manda is a world away from bustling Lamu, here life seems to slow down to island pace allowing you to switch off and truly unwind.
A privately owned sanctuary, Manda offers an unspoilt, secluded escape where you can unwind, surrounded by palm-thatched cottages and open living spaces. A totally unique blend of bush and beach, here you can experience pristine white sands, coconut palms, Doum palms and Acacia Tortilis, alongside diverse wildlife and birdlife from the resident buffalos to dikdik, bushbuck and baboons.
Our rooms are full board
Children of all ages welcome
Located off the Kenya coast in the Lamu Archipelago
At Manda Bay we have 22 rooms which are all subtly nestled into the landscape. Each room is elegantly appointed with everything you need and nothing you don’t! The bedroom villas are simplistic with open air windows with neither shutters nor glass allowing for the cooling breezes to come in along with the sounds of the ocean and resident birdlife. All our rooms are made with locally sourced materials – wood, palm woven matting floors and palm thatching and each room has an oversized walk-in mosquito net over the bed at night, an overhead fan and ensuite bathroom. Each room also has a veranda with chairs and an essential swing bed so you can relax during the day.
Our room categories are as follows:
Overlooking the ocean these are large and spacious rooms that have private access to the beach and are large enough to add in up to 3 child beds (for under 12s) if required
Which are set slightly further back from the seawall on higher ground between the
beachfront rooms, these rooms are cool, airy and equally spacious
Which are slightly smaller rooms, closer together and situated in the middle of the property. These were originally designed for teenagers to make family travel more affordable, but they have been very popular with many of our clients, especially for fishermen, who are out all day or families and couples who want a more affordable option
Additional cost applies for the following extras and experiences:

Lamu is the most well-known and developed of the islands, which has been a focus of Islamic and Swahili culture for more than 700 years and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
Most hotels there have earned a well-earned reputation for providing excellent “barefoot luxury” experiences
