Overview

Magashi Camp is situated in the productive and phenomenally diverse north-eastern corner of Akagera National Park, overlooking beautiful Lake Rwanyakazinga. Akagera comprises some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa – open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp, and grassy low mountains – and is home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities, some very large crocodiles as well as the rare sitatunga and more than 520 bird species.

Teeming with plains game, Akagera now also boasts a healthy population of lion, which were reintroduced into the park in 2015 after a 20-year absence, as well as black rhino which were reintroduced in 2017. Magashi – the only exclusive-use area in Akagera – also harbours a good density of leopard.

Six spacious and airy tents offer uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga, while Magashi’s main area comprises a luxurious lounge, dining and bar area, pool, and expansive viewing deck with a convivial fire pit. The architecture and interiors pay homage to traditional Rwandan culture.

    Highlights

Magashi’s home is 6 000 exclusive-use hectares of Akagera National Park, like Rwanda itself, a miraculous story of survival and regeneration. Located in the country’s north-east, Akagera was devastated by the 1994 genocide and its aftermath, with a rise in poaching and returnees settling with their cattle on park land. Over the last ten years, the park has been significantly rehabilitated and today offers one of the most thrilling safari experiences in Africa.

  • The experience

Witness a national park coming back to life, home again to lions, rhinos, and an abundance of plains game roaming over its gently rolling hills and open savannah. Watch elephants submerge in silver-blue Lake Rwanyakazinga, raising their trunks like periscopes for air. Monitor lions, leopards, and black rhinos, learning the latest in monitoring technology. Safari by boat on the lake, and perhaps enjoy catch-and-release fishing. Drive across one of the most lovely, calming landscapes imaginable, for up-close-and-personal wildlife encounters – many predators; buffalo, zebra and antelope herds; a journey of giraffes; a plethora of birds.

  • Getting there

    By Air

International flights into Rwanda arrive at Kigali International Airport in the country’s capital city.

From here a helicopter may be chartered between Kigali and Bisate, Kigali and Magashi or Bisate and Magashi (and vice versa). All flights and routings are subject to weather conditions, as well as the model of helicopter used.

Akagera Aviation offers the opportunity to either charter a helicopter or book a helicopter seat on a scheduled flight. Please contact your Journey Specialist for further details and costings.

    By Land

If opting for the road transfer to Bisate you will overnight in Kigali before an approximately two-and-a-half-hour road transfer the next day with your Thousand Hills Africa guide in a luxury 4×4. The road transfer to Magashi takes approximately two-and-a-half hours from Kigali to the northern gate of Akagera National Park. This is followed by a game drive from the gate to the camp (duration between 45 and 120 minutes, depending on wildlife sightings and photographic opportunities).
