Remote areas of the Serengeti
We operate our Walking Safaris inside Wilderness Zones where few others are allowed. The lands vary from rocky kopjes, to drainage lines to acacia woodlands to open plains. Most of our guests will go days without seeing another vehicle, providing that true sense of exploration and privacy.
Witness wildebeest migration
Our Walking Safaris are unique to the group and the time of year. Most guests are keen to be in the vicinity of the Migration so we plan our routes and sites very close to the departure date in order to have a clear idea of where the herds are.
Witnessing the Migration on foot is awe-inspiring and these herds also attract a range of other wildlife. All areas of the Serengeti have resident game year-round so we can also cater for guests who are interested in the wide range of flora and fauna that call the Serengeti National Park their home.
All Walking Safaris are planned bespoke to your group. We can run anything from a 2-day Walking Safari up to 14-days
Our Walking Safaris are operated out of our Wayo Walking Camp. This is a small camping rig with half-height cocoon tents which can accommodate a double bed.
The idea of this camp is to be as lightweight as possible so that we can move every other day to a new camp location. As such, our water capacity and waste storage is minimal. We use bucket showers and compost toilets to be as light as possible.
The focus here is on an immersive nature experience. Beds are newly-designed and comfortable and are fashioned on the old-style swag rolls sitting on the ground. These Star Tents are complete gauze with a fly sheet overhead should it rain. When you wake up in the morning, your gaze is through the grasses giving you that true feeling of being immersed in nature.
Due to its light operation and minimal driving in vehicles, this camp can reach areas normally unused by tourists. Guests can go days on these trekking excursions and not see another vehicle in the Serengeti.
Generally, a day will start with a light breakfast to get you walking by 6.30am. Our camp cook will prepare a packed ‘second breakfast’ that will be enjoyed in the wilderness. Your guide will aim to have you back in camp before it’s too hot for a relaxed lunch. Your afternoons will be generally spent like the animals, in a shady spot with your eyes closed. As the day cools you will set off on shorter walks to enjoy the African sunset.
Itineraries will vary depending on the seasons. The beauty of our Walking Camps is that they follow the Migration, but this doesn’t mean the locations change frequently. Trips can be as long or as short as you like, with pricing varying by season. You can also drive or fly into camp depending on your plans. We can offer a variety of packages to meet your needs, from 2-day Walking Safaris to full week.
Are Walking Safaris safe?
Yes, but only with experienced Walking Guides. We were one of the first operators to start Walking safaris in the Serengeti over 20 years ago. Wayo Africa pride ourselves on our exceptional Guide Training and, as such, it is a natural part of our training cycle to aspire to be a Walking Guide.
Guides only become Walking Guides once they have passed regular assessments in both the ecology and topography of the area but also rigorous firearms training. Our Guides are frequently tested and assessed to maintain high safety standards.
Our Safaris are also operated alongside a National Park Ranger who, along with our Guide, also carries a firearm for protection.
The reality is that wildlife tends to give man-on-foot a wide berth. Due to an ancient history of hunting by local cultural groups going back millions of years and then the commercial poaching that consumed the area in the in the early 1900’s, there is an innate wariness of people. This allows us to safely conduct Walking Safaris and absorb the beauty of the Serengeti whilst both parties maintaining a respectful distance
