Overview

WELCOME TO SHAWA LUANGWA CAMP
OUR STORY

Shawa Luangwa Camp is situated on the eastern bank of the Luangwa River on a site hand-picked by Jacob Shawa, the Head Professional Guide at camp. From this beautiful location, you can cross the river on a pontoon or boat and explore the prime game-viewing areas of the South Luangwa National Park.

Jacob Shawa is not only a legendary Zambian guide; he is also the inspiration behind building Shawa Luangwa Camp in the first place. Jacob was brought up in the Luangwa Valley and his interest in wildlife started when he was young. Whilst he was completing secondary school at Mambwe High School (at the time the only secondary school in the Valley) Jacob’s passion for wildlife was so evident that he was named Chairman of the Wildlife Conservation Club for the school.

    THE LUXURY TENTS

Elegance and comfort combine with the quiet intimacy of a classic African bush camp in our five Shawa Luxury Tents. The tents have been raised above the ground on wooden stilts, which lessens their impact on the environment, and they open entirely on three sides to offer an unblocked 270-degree view over the river and across the park.

Stairs lead up to your private wooden deck, where you can watch the meandering Luangwa River passing below. The outdoors flows through into the interior of your A-frame canvas tent that has been built to maximise natural airflow and light.

Inside, soft linens and textiles in cool, neutral tones are paired beautifully with locally sourced, smooth woods. The luxurious en-suite bathroom has a bathtub, shower and double vanities finished with brass.

    THE FAMILY TENT

A home-away-from-home with extra touches of indulgence and comfort, the Shawa Luxury Family Tent welcomes you for a magical safari experience in the South Luangwa.

The Luxury Family Tent is made up of two tents separated by a five metre elevated wooden, with one tent having a king bed and the other twin beds. Each tent has its own en-suite bathroom with modern fittings and a wooden deck that looks over the Luangwa River to the horizon beyond.

Two couples travelling together will appreciate the comfortable balance that this setup offers. You can spend quality time together as a group, while also having the privacy needed for a dreamy getaway with your loved one.

    copper fittings.

Watch elephants come to quench their thirst at the river and little bee-eaters busy themselves in the tree branches shading your deck, all from the comfort of your bed or seating area.

    OUR FAVOURITE PART

Just because it’s a family safari, doesn’t mean you, the parents, can’t spend time together. In fact, we highly recommend that you enjoy the romantic side of the wilderness. The team at Shawa Luangwa is made up of warm and friendly people, including your private valet, who will happily and skillfully look after the children while you have some grown-up time.

  • Getting there

South Luangwa National Park is located near the village of Mfuwe and is 700km/343mi from Lusaka.

New arrivals to Zambia will often come through Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN), the country’s major airport, located 14km/9mi from the capital.

From Lusaka, regular flights take visitors to Mfuwe International Airport (MFU), just outside the park. It is also possible to fly directly to Mfuwe from Lower Zambezi National Park (Jeki Airstrip).

The camp can be most easily accessed via 1 hour’s road transfer from Mfuwe Airport. The site is close to the Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park, overlooking the beautiful Luangwa River.

People driving to the park will usually come via Chipata. The road is tarred, and the drive will take about two hours.

    Mfuwe International Airport (MIA)

Mfuwe International Airport (MIA) was opened in mid 70s as a domestic airport to service the South Luangwa National Game Park, which is one of the largest national game parks in Zambia. The airport gained its international status in 1995 when it was gazetted as a port of entry and exit. The airport serves over twenty lodges and campsites. It has a runway measuring 2.2 km long.

Its’ location in the middle of the South Luangwa National Park makes it convenient for flight connections to most tourist destinations in Zambia and in the region. There are daily flights from Lusaka to Mfuwe and direct flights from Mfuwe to Lilongwe. There are plans to provide for additional connections with other tourist destinations like Mombasa, Victoria Falls, Kariba, Harare and Johannesburg.

  • South Luangwa National Park and best time to visit

    The Park

South Luangwa National Park in itself sets our camp apart from all the other areas, the valley of the leopards is truly something special.
Located at the cross-hold of the South Luangwa National Park and Nsefue sector, in which we do game drives.

Experience the Silent Safari – the electric vehicles allow guests to sneak up on the famous oxbow lagoons without startling the game.

    Best time to visit.

The best time to go to South Luangwa National Park is the period between middle of June and October when the park is at its driest and the days are warm with plenty of sun
