Immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the Upper Zambezi region. Beyond the fishing, discover golden sunsets, rare birdlife, and the peaceful solitude of Africa’s last great wilderness — all from the comfort of our riverside lodge.
Mutemwa Lodge sits on the Upper Zambezi River in Western Zambia’s Sesheke District, with access to 90km of virtually private river. Guests enjoy this untouched stretch without another boat in sight—perfect for peaceful fishing and river adventures. Our cooler climate sets us apart, especially during the hotter months.
Mutemwa lies in the heart of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), the world’s largest transboundary conservation area. Spanning five countries, KAZA protects vital wildlife corridors and supports Africa’s largest elephant population—over 220,000 strong—while promoting sustainable tourism and preserving key migration routes and habitats.

Mutemwa is nestled directly on the banks of the mighty Upper Zambezi River, one of Africa’s most iconic waterways. This privileged riverside location not only offers breathtaking views and access to world-class tiger fishing, but also shapes the very environment around the lodge. Unlike the harsher inland bush, the river brings a more temperate climate, especially under Mutemwa’s signature canopy of big trees — a natural refuge of shade and coolness throughout the year.
The presence of the Zambezi creates a rich mosaic of habitats, attracting a vibrant variety of birdlife, aquatic species, and riverine wildlife. From hippos and crocodiles to otters and kingfishers, the river pulses with life, adding another layer of depth and diversity to your Mutemwa experience. Here, the rhythm of the Zambezi sets the pace — slow, steady, and alive with wonder.
Just 80km upriver from Mutemwa Lodge, Ngonye Falls is one of Zambia’s best-kept secrets. Also known as Sioma Falls, this breathtaking cascade stretches across the Zambezi in a wide, horseshoe-shaped drop, creating powerful rapids and misty rainbows that dance above the gorge. Less crowded than Victoria Falls, Ngonye offers a more untouched and intimate natural spectacle. The falls mark the point where the Zambezi River begins its dramatic journey through rocky gorges — and they form the highlight of one of our most popular Mutemwa safaris. A visit to Ngonye Falls is not just a scenic experience, but a journey through the heart of Zambia’s wild beauty.
Located just beyond Mutemwa, the Sioma Ngwezi National Park is one of Zambia’s largest and least-explored conservation areas. With no fences separating the park from the surrounding wilderness, wildlife roams freely — and for generations, animals have used the undisturbed land where Mutemwa now stands as a natural corridor to reach the Zambezi River, especially during the dry season when water is scarce in the park. Though
Mutemwa itself is outside the park boundaries, this unique connection allows us to offer exclusive bush safaris deep within Sioma Ngwezi. We take guests into the heart of the park and set up a simple yet comfortable mobile camp, where the solitude and raw beauty of the wild create an unforgettable and truly off-the-grid safari experience — with no other people in sight.
Your adventure begins with two nights at Mutemwa Lodge, where you’ll fish the legendary Zambezi River right from the lodge’s doorstep, while enjoying the comfort, luxury, and tranquility of our beautiful surroundings.
On day three, your journey upriver begins. Fishing from the lodge all the way to Ngonye Falls National Park—an 80km stretch—you’ll target the Zambezi’s prime fishing spots, guided by our expert team who know every secret of these waters. Along the way, enjoy lunch and ice-cold drinks, with our boats fully equipped for your comfort.
At Ngonye Falls, you’ll spend two unforgettable nights camping on the white sand beaches, sleeping in comfortable bow tents, dining under the stars, and gathering around a crackling beach fire.
You’ll fish the gorge below Ngonye Falls—the second largest waterfall on the Zambezi—where deep waters and powerful rapids create the perfect hunting grounds for monster tigerfish. This is your chance to land your biggest tiger yet! Between casts, take time to explore the spectacular Ngonye falls and cool off with a refreshing swim!
Your return leg sees you fishing downstream all the way back to Mutemwa, culminating in a final evening of relaxation. On your day of departure, squeeze in one last early morning session before breakfast, making every moment count.

Remember those good old safaris where hunters and fishermen would set up a camp in the most remote places in Africa? Safari tents with comfortable beds, hot showers and proper toilets.
An impressive thatched roof area with an amazing view for early morning coffee around the camp fire, before you go out for a good mornings fish. Coming back to a delicious brunch prepared by our friendly chefs.
Followed by an afternoon nap or some birding before heading out on the water again after some high tea, catching Africa’s mighty Tiger fish and a couple of the spectacular Yellow Belly Robustus Bream (Nembwe) for dinner.
Back in camp as the sun is setting, after a hot shower, you’ll be sitting around the campfire enjoying a drink with lots of ice and telling great stories about the days adventure.
The camp chef announces dinner, the table is set under the stars, lit up with colonial paraffin lanterns where your delicious 3 course meal is served.
The next day you can choose to take a packed lunch and a full cool box filled with drinks and ice for a full day of fishing, choosing to either head up or downriver to find untouched waters filled with promising trophies.
