Madikwe Game Reserve is a conservation area in South Africa’s North West Province, bordering Botswana and currently the fifth largest game reserve and is also one of the lesser-known parks in South Africa.
The park is now 680 km² by itself, and 750 km², including the now incorporated privately owned land.
Situated on the border with Botswana close to the Kalahari Desert
The winter months, approximately July through September, can be the most rewarding for game viewing and the weather is pleasant, with warm days and cold nights. It is a time when the vegetation is thinning out and the animals are concentrating around available water, making it easier to spot them.
Some of the animals found here, the elephants are abundant, the common ones include Giraffe, Buffalo, Zebra. Wildebeest, White Rhino and Black Rhino are rare with Hippo being the Occasional ones.
Over 350 species of birds have been recorded at Madikwe including many interesting raptors.
The yearly average maximum temperature in Madikwe Game Reserve is 29°C (ranging from 21°C in july to 33°C in november). Annual rainfall is 532mm, with a minimum of 1mm in august and a maximum of 106mm in january
