Did you know that the Persian calendar celebrates New Year on March 21st? To me, this makes more sense as Spring feels more like a new beginning than January 1st.

This Persian New Year, also called Nowruz, means “new day” and it’s widely celebrated in Central Asia. This ancient festival symbolizes rebirth and features various activities, including traditional music and dance performances, spirited horse games, and the preparation of special dishes like sumalak, a sweet wheat-based treat. I celebrated Nowruz a few years ago in Kyrgyzstan, you can read more about in my blog post Celebrating Nowruz in Kyrgyzsta

Spring is one of the best seasons to visit the highlights of Uzbekistan.
The pleasant spring climate enhances the exploration of its storied cities. It’s also the perfect weather for hiking in the Chimgan and Nuratau mountains as the temperatures are still mild. The Flower Festival in Namangan in the Ferghana Valley, held annually, showcases vibrant floral displays and cultural performances, adding a splash of color to the season.

In Kazakhstan, Spring is an excellent time to visit the Almaty region, where the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains provide a stunning backdrop for hiking and outdoor activities. Read here more about hiking near Almaty.

As winter recedes, the rugged mountains and expansive valleys in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan slowly come alive.

While many trekking trails and alpine lakes won’t be accessible yet, there are already some hikes to go on and beautiful places to visit in Kyrgyzstan, like Ala-Archa National Park, located just a short drive from Bishkek, that offers accessible trails where you can witness the emerging flora and cascading rivers fed by melting snow.

I wrote a guide about Ala Archa and other places to visit in Kyrgyzstan in Spring, including the best hikes. Most semi-nomadic yurt camps won’t be around yet, but you can still stay in one of the tourist yurt camps, especially the ones around Issyk Kul Lake.

Tajikistan is very similar to Kyrgyzstan. The Pamir Highway will be mainly inaccessible, and the hiking trails in the Pamir Mountain Range are closed, but you could already go hiking in some areas of the Fann Mountains, although you’ll need to check beforehand which trails are open and where you need to watch out for avalanches.
