This is a premier birding destination, boasting of over 334 species in the area, particularly renowned for massive flocks of migratory birds and waterbirds between May and July.

This is the fourth most important site globally for wattled cranes, with over 1,000 birds gathering, alongside many grey crowned cranes.

The flood plains attract African spoonbill, saddle-billed stork, grey heron, and various plovers and sandpipers.
Martial eagles, bateleurs, and the elusive Pel’s fishing owl can be found, particularly along the Luanginga and Luambimba rivers
