Overview

Wake up with the sun from your eco-luxe chalet and peer out over the magnificent Zambezi River, place of the wild. Sit back and watch the River come to life with colours, sights & sounds.

At Chundukwa River Lodge we enjoy ‘the best of both worlds’. We live on a horse ranch situated just 25kms from Victoria Falls – close enough for our guests to experience all that our beautiful destination has to offer – yet far enough to offer a sanctuary. This is a place where you really can you “feel” where you are. A place you may feel completely content in doing nothing at all – but with the option to do a lot if you want. You can combine Chundukwa River Lodge and Simalaha Lodge on 8-day Sample ITINERATY, View details here.

We are dedicated to three activities: the hosting of guests; working hand-in-hand with our community to promote sustainable living practices; and the running of our stables & horse safari operations at home and in the Simalaha Conservancy. The spirit that courses through the veins of our operation is one of kindness, on the back of our conviction that “people who are valued, provide valuable hospitality.”

Chundukwa River Lodge is an owner-run lodge, you will meet the owners Doug and Gail who live there and run the lodge. The lodge is well-known for being in a very wild and beautiful area, surrounded by giant trees and lots of nature. It is located approximately 25kms from the town, which means you are away from the tourism hustle and bustle.

Doug is one of Zambia’s most respected horsemen – there is a large stable at the property – guests are welcome to walk around and enjoy it all, and to visit and ride the horses if they wish. Guests that stay here have use of a driver and vehicle for a day to go into town and see Victoria Falls and anything else they wish to see. There is a lovely curio market for shopping and Livingstone

  • Why travel in the second half of the year?

Visiting Chundukwa River Lodge during the second half of the year – July through December – offers some of the most rewarding safari and travel experiences in Zambia!

July–August: This is our dry season with clear skies, cool mornings, and warm days. Wildlife starts to congregate around the Zambezi River, making our river cruises an absolute joy for wildlife and birding enthusiasts. Victoria Falls is still flowing but less misty, offering excellent visibility and amazing photo opportunities with plenty of rainbows in shot!

September–October: These are our peak wildlife viewing months. As the summer sun and temps soar, game sightings are exceptional, especially here on the Zambezi River, in our local Mosi Oa Tunya National Park and nearby Chobe National Park. It’s also a fantastic time for birders!

November: This is the month that we hope and expect rain! By the end of November, our golden and dry landscape usually transforms into the land of green almost overnight – also referred to as the ‘Emerald Season’. It’s a magical, transitional period with fewer tourists, making it ideal for those seeking peaceful, crowd-free travel.

December: Now the green season should be in full swing, along with dramatic skies and an explosion of wild babies and birdlife. While game viewing shifts slightly, it’s an ideal time for photographers, birders, and those seeking serenity. Victoria Falls begins to build flow again, offering a unique contrast to earlier months.
