    The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana lying south-west of the Okavango Delta and surrounded by the Kalahari Desert.

  • Best time to visit

    Though you can easily visit all year round, the best time to experience the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans of Botswana is between November and April. It’s green and lush and welcomes the largest African animal migration


  • Animals

    Some animals found here include the Cape baboons or Chacma baboons, the vervet monkeys, some giraffes and sometimes some elephants, there is also a small population of waterbucks. Other animals include the large herds of zebras, oryx, wildebeests, impalas and springbuck roam the northern part of the reserve, Lions are also found here.

  • Birding

    Makgadikgadi Pans is a great park for bird watching throughout the year, but the thousands of flamingo that flock here in the wet summer months are the real highlight but the best months are in the Wet season, from November to April.


  • Weather

    The average rainfall is 450 to 500 mm per annum with most rain falling as thunderstorms during the summer months from October to March and little falling during the winter (May to August). Summer temperatures average around 35°C and reach a maximum of 44°C
